Documentary about Rush Drummer Neil Peart Releases First Trailer. Geddy Lee Says the Band Never Properly Paid Tribute to Him
Canadian public broadcaster CBC has released the first trailer for the documentary Neil Peart: No One's Disciple about Rush's drummer. Pitchfork ↗
Peart was not just a drummer for Rush; he also wrote lyrics for the band. He died on January 7, 2020, at the age of 67, from glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain tumor.
The film features both of his bandmates — vocalist and bassist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson — and along with them four drummers: Stewart Copeland from The Police, Danny Carey from Tool, Chad Smith from Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Gavin Harrison from Porcupine Tree. Blabbermouth ↗
"After Neil passed away, we never really were able to pay tribute to him. And that weighed on me a lot," Lee says in one of the clips. Pitchfork ↗
Lifeson, in turn, recalls his first impression of Peart: "I remember thinking there's no way this guy is cool enough to be in our band." Ultimate Classic Rock ↗
The trailer also includes archival interviews with Peart himself. In one, he describes how he got into drums: "When I started to get around 11 or 12 years old I was banging around the house and smashing up pots and pans, and my parents got the idea that I liked to hit things with sticks." Pitchfork ↗
The film was directed jointly by Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn, the same pair who made the documentary Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage in 2010. Blabbermouth ↗
It will premiere on September 16 at the Toronto Film Festival, with another public screening on September 19, and CBC will air it on September 23 as part of The Passionate Eye series. Blabbermouth ↗ The date for wider distribution has not yet been determined. Pitchfork ↗
Lee and Lifeson, meanwhile, are touring as Rush on the Fifty Something World Tour, with Anika Nilles on drums. Pitchfork ↗
