Croatia
What is happening there and why it matters.
So it makes sense
Croatia is a country most Slovaks and Czechs know from holidays — which shows in what gets written about it here: land prices, islands, hotels, but also what happens when hundreds of thousands of extra tourists live there for a few weeks a year. It has been in the euro area and in Schengen since 2023, so the drive to the sea needs neither a border stop nor a currency exchange. The summer of 2026 showed the other side too: extensive wildfires around Omiš with fatalities, cases of West Nile fever, and the crash of a small aircraft from Czechia.
- Who governs
- The prime minister is Andrej Plenković (HDZ), who has led the country for several terms. After the fires near Omiš he faced questions about why the SRUUK system sent residents no warning — and did not explain it. Croatia is also raising its profile in the Three Seas Initiative: it hosted the Dubrovnik summit in April 2026 together with Pellegrini and Polish president Nawrocki.
- Who opposes
- The government’s main political counterweight is not an opposition party but President Zoran Milanović. He runs his own foreign policy line and diverges openly from the cabinet — in March 2026 he cancelled a Western Balkans summit over remarks by Serbian president Vučić. To follow Croatian news you have to expect the head of state and the prime minister to say opposite things.
- Next election
- The next parliamentary election is expected in 2028.
