Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar and Finance Minister András Kármán presented the main parameters of the 2027 budget on October 20. The government expects economic growth of 2.4 percent, inflation of three percent, and a budget deficit of 4.9 percent of GDP. HVG ↗

Kármán stated that the goal is to reduce the deficit to 7.5 percent of GDP by the end of 2026. He described the proposal as a budget of fairness and development. The government has also prepared a medium-term plan with target figures through 2030. Index.hu ↗

The measures are to include a reduction in the tax burden for approximately 2.5 million employees. The tax rate on the minimum wage is to drop to nine percent starting next year, which should bring people earning the minimum income an annual tax reduction of approximately 240,000 forints. Family allowances are to be doubled, and the minimum pension is also to be increased. Telex ↗

The government wants to cover expenditures through savings and new or increased taxes. Planned measures include a wealth tax for billionaires, expected to generate annual revenue of 200 billion forints. A further 260 billion is expected to come from an increase in corporate income tax and the innovation contribution. The government is also counting on savings of 2,200 billion forints.

The detailed budget proposal has not yet been submitted to parliament. Its approval, and whether the planned revenues and savings will be achieved, will therefore be decided by the further legislative process.
