Sweden

What is happening there and why it matters.

So it makes sense

Sweden has changed more in recent years than any other Nordic country: it gave up two centuries of neutrality, joined NATO, and is fully engaged with gang violence that long did not fit its self-image. It is worth watching because the same questions — security, migration, trust in the state — are playing out there a few years ahead of us.

Who governs
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, who led the centre-right bloc, asked the Speaker on 17 September 2026 to be relieved of office after losing the election. His cabinet stays on as caretaker until a new government is appointed; the Speaker of the Riksdag leads the talks.
Who opposes
The left bloc led by Magdalena Andersson's Social Democrats narrowly won the election — by three seats (176:173). Jimmie Akesson's Sweden Democrats did worse than the polls suggested. Given the slim margin and difficult coalition arithmetic, it is not certain Andersson can form a government.
Next election
The left opposition won the 13 September 2026 election 176-173. Parliament rejected Andersson twice, most recently on 15 October; the right may get a turn.
