France extends local curfews after protests
The protests affected several French cities, including Paris. According to the mayor of one French city, there was an insufficient number of police officers present in the capital during Saturday's demonstrations. In Paris, electric bicycles were also burned during the unrest, and the company Lime stated that it lost approximately six percent of its local fleet. Independent ↗
Footage from Paris also showed a calmer atmosphere on a café terrace near the Arc de Triomphe, filmed on Saturday evening. In other cities, however, investigations into the violence and property damage continued. Police detained a forty-year-old man suspected of involvement in Saturday's arson attack on the town hall in Limoges. Telex ↗
In a town in the Maine-et-Loire department, the mayor condemned the violence and the damage to public property. In protest against the events, he had flags lowered to half-mast and had the portrait of President Emmanuel Macron removed. Further developments will depend on the situation in individual cities and on decisions by local authorities regarding the continuation of security measures. Le Figaro ↗
