Israel also killed intelligence minister Khatib — third liquidation of an Iranian official in two days
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on Wednesday that an overnight airstrike killed Iranian intelligence minister Esmail Khatib. This is the third liquidation of a high-ranking Iranian official in two days — following security council secretary Ali Larijani and Basij paramilitary forces commander Gholamreza Soleimani. Al Jazeera ↗
Khatib was a graduate of a theological seminary in Qom and studied directly under the late supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei. He held the title "Proof of Islam" — one of the highest religious titles in the country. Al Jazeera's correspondent described him as "truly one of the top clerics" with "decades of experience in intelligence circles, particularly civilian ones." Khatib was considered a trusted figure close to the new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei. NPR ↗
Tehran has so far neither confirmed nor denied Khatib's death. Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi responded that the liquidations would not weaken the Iranian government: "The United States and Israel still haven't realized that the Iranian government does not rely on a single individual." In two days, Israel has thus eliminated three of the most influential men in the Iranian regime — the head of the security council, the commander of the Basij, and the intelligence minister.
