Storms and fires continue to keep firefighters busy in Germany

After the weekend, firefighters in Germany responded to multiple fires and the effects of severe weather in various federal states. The original operations involving forest and field fires were joined by new incidents, in which injuries, extensive damage, and hundreds of call-outs were reported. Die Zeit ↗

In southern Germany, severe storms caused injuries, power outages, and a large number of emergency responses. In the area around Nuremberg, Fürth, Erlangen, and neighboring districts, emergency services received nearly 3,000 emergency calls, and firefighters recorded approximately 1,000 call-outs. Nuremberg Airport had to temporarily suspend operations. In Saarland, there were more than 50 operations following a storm in Saarbrücken, while in Karlsruhe a person was fatally struck by a falling tree. Die Zeit ↗

Fires continued to keep firefighters busy outside the storm-affected areas as well. A room fire at a clinic caused significant property damage and injured a firefighter. In Jüterbog, a fire continued burning on a former military site, and a fire watch remained on site overnight. Other operations involved fires in Bremerhaven, a destroyed family home in Gernrode, a burning bungalow in Berlin-Müggelheim, and a van fire in Berlin-Spandau. Spiegel.de ↗

Previous information about field and forest fires remains relevant, particularly in connection with the drought. The risk of further operations will depend on the weather, the development of storms, and dry conditions in nature, especially during the harvest and in forested areas. Welt ↗
