Americký dolar je oficiální měna Spojených států amerických i některých dalších zemí, další státy pak mají svou měnu pevně vázánu na kurz amerického dolaru. Americký dolar je nejpoužívanější měna v mezinárodních transakcích, v mnoha ostatních státech je také široce používána jako bankovní rezerva. V dubnu 2004 bylo v oběhu téměř 700 miliard dolarů, z čehož asi dvě třetiny mimo Spojené státy. Důvodem je, že jej mnohé centrální banky drží společně se zlatem jako rezervu.
