Chad Gilbert, founding guitarist and lead songwriter of the American pop-punk band New Found Glory, has died at the age of 45. The band announced his death on Sunday, September 20, saying he passed "peacefully in his sleep" surrounded by family and friends — alongside his wife Lisa Cimorelli and his mother, Jackie. SPIN ↗
Gilbert had battled health problems for more than fifteen years. In 2010, half of his thyroid gland was removed due to suspicious cells, and since 2021, when he was diagnosed with liver cancer, he underwent a series of oncological surgeries. Gilbert founded New Found Glory in 1997 at the age of seventeen, together with Jordan Pundik, Ian Grushka, and Steve Klein. He wrote most of the band's repertoire, including two songs that defined an entire pop-punk era — "My Friends Over You" and "Head On Collision." "His guitar playing, songwriting talent, sense of humor, and unwavering determination shaped New Found Glory for almost thirty years," his bandmates wrote in a joint statement. "He pushed us to grow as musicians, as performers, and as human beings."
