What Europe writes about: Lukoil's main refineries are down, US intelligence warning in Moscow targeted the Baltics, Iran and Oman tackle the Hormuz route

The night window of European press brought three things that touch each other. According to Portuguese and Macedonian media, Tehran and Muscat agreed on a temporary shipping regime through the strait, through which approximately one-fifth of world oil passes — and at the same time another tanker was burning there. The director of American intelligence warned of an attack on NATO during a secret trip to Moscow; according to Politico, the core of the warning was the Baltics. In the afternoon, the head of Russian foreign intelligence also confirmed the visit, but the allies disagree on what the warning concerned: former Estonian President Ilves claims it was about Iran and not the Baltics, the Lithuanian prime minister, on the other hand, sees support for the region in it — and European intelligence services, according to Greek media, say that Moscow is not planning an attack on NATO member states. And all major Russian refineries, including the NORSI plant, which is Russia's second-largest gasoline producer, are down for Lukoil following drone attacks.

An overview from 36 countries, as written overnight by domestic editorial offices.

🔍 What has not yet been heard in Slovak and Czech media

Three topics from this window have not a single article in our media over the past week, although foreign newsrooms are covering them:

  • West Nile virus in Greece has claimed 19 lives with 232 confirmed cases, and Greek media are talking about heading toward a record year. Greece is one of the main September holiday destinations, and there is no vaccine or targeted treatment against the infection.
  • In Estonian presidential elections there is only one candidate and citizens do not vote. The president is elected by parliament, or by an electoral college — a mechanism that a Finnish newspaper analyzed precisely because it has become a formality.
  • Belgian potato harvest is at a record low after a hot summer and threatens supplies of frozen fries. Belgium is their largest world exporter; Finnish media pointed this out, not Belgian news agencies.

⚠️ Limits of this view

This is an overview of headlines from a night window, not verified reporting. Some reports are several hours old at the time of publication and figures of victims or missing persons changed practically every hour during the Nepal disaster — in the morning we reported 165 dead and over a thousand missing, by afternoon authorities spoke of at least 362 dead and over 1,400 missing (yellow wave below). Regarding the visit of the US intelligence chief to Moscow, we rely on what Politico and Wall Street Journal wrote citing unnamed sources; official confirmation of the content of talks does not exist and Trump publicly downplayed it. The sum Meta will pay to settle the dispute over the impact of social networks on children varies across different media (16, 17 and 18 billion dollars) — the difference apparently depends on what each media outlet includes in the settlement. Data on Iranian rocket attacks on American intelligence facilities come from the Iranian side and have not been independently verified. Even at the Strait of Hormuz, media formulations diverge: the Portuguese newspaper writes about a joint statement on the strait, the Macedonian about a temporary route and agencies about negotiations that are not yet concluded — so far only an agreement on a temporary shipping regime is certain.
