🔭 What in This Window Deserves a Second Look

Albania has been in the streets for 87 days and almost nobody outside the Balkans writes about it. A European Union candidate country is experiencing its third month of daily protests demanding Prime Minister Edi Rama's resignation. On Tuesday, a mass march passed through Tirana and there were calls for the anti-corruption prosecutor SPAK to arrest him in the first week of September. Parallel to this, day 26 of protests in Divjaka against municipality merger is ongoing. It is a test of what "EU enlargement" really means — and in our window, only two Albanian newsrooms covered it.

Hungary is launching asset recovery from Orbán's era and it is an institutional story, not a personal one. A hundred days after the change of government, candidates for head of the asset recovery office were heard, Fidesz boycotted the selection, the agriculture minister sent a tough message to Lőrinc Mészáros's company, and the central bank is considering releasing previously classified contracts. The pro-government daily Magyar Nemzet frames it all as "rule by revenge". The question Hungary is opening here is universal: by what means can the cemented network be dismantled after a change of power — and where is the line between law and retaliation.

Ceuta stopped being a migration crisis and became geopolitics. The Moroccan minister speaks of "liberation" of Ceuta, Spanish intelligence reports movements timed to Moroccan elections on September 23, hacker Jabaroot released the largest leak from Moroccan intelligence, and Defense Minister Robles documented that CNI warned the interior ministry a day before the mass entry.
