Putin's Escalation Concerns NATO and Europe
Videos
According to available information, the Kremlin is preparing for more serious steps, as negotiations about a peace agreement are not bringing results. Options being considered include intimidation with tactical nuclear weapons and an intensification of ballistic attacks on Kyiv, including targets in the city center and critical infrastructure in other parts of Ukraine.
Tensions are also being raised by Russian threats against Britain and France. London and Paris have promised further support to Ukraine, which is to include the transfer of sensitive rocket technology. Moscow subsequently warned that it could strike British military targets in Ukraine and beyond.
Europe is meanwhile seeking ways to strengthen its own deterrence. Germany is negotiating assistance in financing the British nuclear Trident program, as concerns about a Russian attack on NATO are growing and the United States is considering withdrawing some troops from Europe.
Analysts point out that Vladimir Putin is aware that a war against NATO would be suicidal for Russia. Nevertheless, he may try to push the boundaries of pressure if he perceives weakness in the West. The further development therefore depends on whether NATO's deterrence remains sufficiently credible. idnes.cz ↗
