Constitutional Court orders Reiche to remove video about the Die Linke party

Germany's Federal Constitutional Court ordered Economy Minister Katherina Reiche to temporarily remove a video from the social network Instagram containing accusations against the Die Linke party. The court granted the party's request for an interim injunction. Deutschlandfunk ↗

The video was published on the official Instagram account of the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs. In it, Reiche spoke about alleged antisemitism within the Die Linke party and described it as dangerous for Germany. She also mentioned the party's positions on expropriation. n-tv ↗

The court's decision concerns proceedings on an urgent motion filed by Die Linke over the content of the video and the manner of its publication via the ministerial account. The party objected to the fact that the minister, in her governmental capacity, publicly attributed antisemitism to a political entity. Welt ↗

So far, the court has only ruled on the temporary removal of the post. The available information does not indicate that it has thereby definitively resolved the entire dispute over the admissibility of the minister's statements or the limits of political communication by members of the government. The case could have broader significance for the use of official government communication channels for political statements. Further developments will depend on the continuation of proceedings before the Federal Constitutional Court.
