Social Democrats and Greens in Berlin have suspended exploratory talks with the left-wing Die Linke party on forming a new government. The decision came after the constitutive meeting of the Die Linke parliamentary group in the Berlin parliament. ORF ↗
The reason is a dispute over the party's stance on antisemitism and Israel. A controversial member was admitted to the parliamentary group, whose views raised objections among potential coalition partners. SPD and the Greens are now demanding a declaration signed by all members of the Die Linke parliamentary group concerning their approach to antisemitism. Deutschlandfunk ↗
Both parties first want to assess whether the declaration corresponds to the agreement reached during the talks so far. Until now, the exploratory talks had proceeded without major public disputes. The suspension came shortly before the next planned meeting of the three parties. Tagesspiegel ↗
Green Party co-chair Franziska Brantner supported the decision. She stated that Die Linke had not kept to the agreement, which she said complicates further negotiations. The left-wing party still wants to form a coalition with the Social Democrats and the Greens in Berlin. Deutschlandfunk ↗
The further course of action will depend on the content and assessment of the requested declaration. Until the SPD and the Greens evaluate whether Die Linke can adopt a joint position on antisemitism, negotiations on a possible government remain on hold. Die Zeit ↗
