Berlin begins negotiations on possible government of the Left, Greens and SPD

Representatives of Die Linke, the Greens and the SPD met in Berlin for the first time after the state parliament elections to negotiate a possible joint government. The initial talks are so far focused on finding common positions on selected political topics. Tagesspiegel ↗

The parties want to reach agreement on issues of antisemitism, organized crime and the approach to racism. The first round is meant to produce joint commitments that could form the basis for further negotiations on the composition of the Berlin government. Deutschlandfunk ↗

The meeting still has the character of preliminary talks. At this stage, the politicians are not dealing with a complete coalition program or the distribution of government positions. First, they are trying to verify whether there is sufficient agreement between the parties in areas they consider important for the functioning of the city.

Neukölln mayor for the SPD Martin Hikel expressed concerns before any further steps and is demanding that party members also vote on any eventual agreement. His stance suggests that within the Social Democrats, the question of cooperation with Die Linke may be subject to further debate. Tagesspiegel ↗

The outcome of the negotiations will depend on whether the parties can overcome differences not only on security and social issues but also on the broader direction of the capital. The next steps will show whether the preliminary talks turn into formal coalition negotiations.
