IOC President Coventry officially closed the Winter Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo

International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry officially closed the XXV Winter Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo on Sunday. The Olympic flame was extinguished in Verona after sixteen days during which individual competitions were held in Italian cities. The Games marked the return of spectators to the stands after the "pandemic" Winter Games in Beijing in 2022. During the closing ceremony, the Olympic relay was handed over to France, which will host the next Winter Olympic Games. Organizers awarded a total of 116 sets of medals during the two-week marathon. Norway became the most successful country, surpassing its own medal record and dominating the overall standings for the fourth time in a row. The Czech Republic came away from the Games with five medals. The Slovak ice hockey team finished in fourth place. Slovakia did not win a single medal. Approximately 1.3 million tickets were sold for the competitions, representing 88 percent of the available tickets. Of these, 37 percent were purchased by local Italians, making the Games a commercial success. The Winter Olympic Games in Italy thus contributed to the return of the experience of spectator presence in the stands after a several-year break.
