The Austrian investor was convicted of fraud against creditors during insolvency proceedings. The court sentenced him to 30 months in prison, of which he served approximately 21 months. He will therefore move from prison to a house arrest regime. teraz.sk ↗

Benko's defense lawyer requested his release. The Economic Crimes Prosecutor's Office opposed the request, but the court did not take its position into account. The decision allows Benko to prepare for further court proceedings outside prison, with his movements monitored via an electronic device. Der Standard ↗

Benko's Signa group was previously involved in extensive real estate projects across Europe. After its financial situation deteriorated, the empire became insolvent, and its founder faces multiple legal proceedings.

Another trial, in which Benko is charged with serious fraud, is set to begin in November. House arrest with the monitoring bracelet will remain in effect during preparation for this trial. The Austrian judicial authorities will decide on further steps depending on how the new trial proceeds. Welt ↗
