Slovakia fails to defend bronze at Winter Olympics, Finland wins 1:6

Slovak ice hockey players failed to defend their bronze medal from the Beijing Olympics. In the bronze medal game at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, they suffered a clear 1:6 defeat to Finland. The Slovak team thus narrowly missed out on a medal and finished fourth in the tournament.

The Finnish hockey players handled their position as favorites and were already leading 2:0 by the halfway point of the game, thanks to goals from Sebastian Aho and Erik Haula. During Saturday's match, the Slovaks found no way to stop their opponent. They went into the game without forward Martin Pospíšil, who was replaced in the center of the second line by Lukáš Cingel.

The players of the Slovak team took a long time to come to terms with the result. Head coach Vladimír Országh and his colleagues emphasized that the guys tried hard and delivered a good performance given their capabilities. However, disappointment was also palpable in the reactions of individual players, who struggled to find words to explain the failure. Despite the loss, foreign experts as well as domestic pundits rated the finish among the tournament's top four teams as a great success for the Slovak national team. The dispute over whether fourth place is a success or a failure, however, divides opinions even within the team itself.
