Zverev has officially taken over the ATP world rankings

Alexander Zverev became the new world number one in men's tennis in mid-October 2026. The 29-year-old German thus reached the highest position of his career and at the same time followed in the footsteps of Boris Becker, who was the last German leader of the world rankings before him. His move to first place was helped by the elimination of Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in the third round of the Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai. Alcaraz lost to unseeded Belgian Zizou Bergs, which definitively cost him the chance to prevent Zverev from taking over the leading position. Zverev replaced Italian Jannik Sinner at the top. sport.sk ↗

The German is also continuing at the Shanghai tournament. In the round of 16, he fought his way through a demanding match, although according to available information he also had physical problems. After the victory, he spoke of the exceptional feeling that comes with reaching the position of world number one. Tagesspiegel ↗

Zverev has had a successful season, during which he triumphed at Roland Garros and the US Open. He is also set to become the first German men's tennis player to finish the calendar year at the top of the ATP rankings. His number one ranking thus represents a significant milestone for German tennis, and the further course of the season will show whether he can maintain his leading position against his biggest rivals.
