The European Union officially designated the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as terrorists

The Council of the European Union officially designated the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) as a terrorist organization on Thursday. The decision means the freezing of this organization's financial assets within the territory of the European Union. The reason for the inclusion on the list of terrorist entities was the violent suppression of recent mass protests in Iran, in which, according to human rights organizations, thousands of people lost their lives.

The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, described this step as the right one and characterized it as a clear signal. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard is already recognized as a terrorist organization by Australia, Canada and the United States of America.

The decision of the Council of the European Union represents a further step in the international stance towards the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in connection with human rights violations and violence committed against its own population. Inclusion on the EU list of terrorists brings practical consequences in the form of financial sanctions and restrictions within the European financial system.
