Ahold Delhaize buys Tesco in Czechia and Slovakia

The agreement marks the departure of the British retail chain from the Czech and Slovak markets. Tesco had operated in the region for approximately three decades. In Slovakia, it operates hundreds of stores, which will pass to the new owner once the transaction is completed. ekonomika.pravda.sk ↗

Ahold Delhaize is one of the major players in retail and operates in Czechia under the Albert brand. After taking over Tesco's stores, more than 300 supermarkets in both countries will change owners. In Czechia, some Tesco outlets are expected to be converted into Albert stores. denik.cz ↗

Other interested parties had also bid for Tesco's Czech and Slovak business, including the Polish company Biedronka and the German chain Lidl. Ahold Delhaize ultimately emerged as the successful buyer. denikn.cz ↗

The transaction is still subject to approval by regulatory authorities. Only after obtaining it will it be possible to complete the transfer of the business and begin changing the stores' signage. The decision also does not change Tesco's situation in Hungary, which, according to available information, has not yet been decided. STVR (Minúta po minúte) ↗
