Committee postpones debate on abolishing fees for ČT and ČRo

The Chamber of Deputies' committee for media and culture has postponed until December the discussion of a government bill that is meant to abolish radio and television fees. Under the proposal, the financing of Czech Television and Czech Radio would be transferred to the state budget. The several-hour-long session was marked by disputes between the coalition and the opposition. denik.cz ↗

Culture Minister Oto Klempíř, who represented the government on the committee, accused the opposition of dragging public service media into the political fight and turning them into hostages. He described criticism of the proposal as part of a political clash. He referred to the vote on the change in financing as "Black Friday." irozhlas.cz ↗

Opposition lawmakers criticized the government's plan and questioned its impact on the functioning of public-service media. Sharp objections were also raised during the session against Klempíř and his defense of the proposal. forum24.cz ↗

Czech Television Director General Hynek Chudárek warned the lawmakers that operating with a budget roughly one billion crowns lower than at present would mean the broadcaster could not function as it does now. The concerns relate above all to the future level of financing after the fees are abolished. forum24.cz ↗

The committee's session was also followed by the public, with around a hundred people attending according to available figures. The governing coalition promises a thorough debate, so the final decision on the shape of financing for ČT and ČRo will depend on further discussion in the Chamber of Deputies. denikn.cz ↗
