Newcomer SV Elversberg entered football's Bundesliga on Saturday, August 29 with a 3:2 victory over Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the 1st round of the new season. The club from a Saar municipality with approximately 13,000 inhabitants achieved a surprising success against the favorite at their league debut. teraz.sk ↗
Elversberg played a historic match for football in Saarland at their home stadium An der Kaiserlinde, which according to German media is still under reconstruction. Despite their outsider status, they handled the start of the top division victoriously and dealt Leverkusen an unexpected start to the season. Multiple sources have labeled the result as one of the main highlights of Saturday's program in the first round. Deutschlandfunk ↗
Leverkusen attempted a comeback in the final stages, but the rally came too late. Slovak striker Patrik Schick, according to Slovak sources, scored with an effective heel kick, but his goal was not enough for Bayer to earn points. For the club, it was also the Bundesliga debut of new coach Carles Martínez, which ended in a loss to the newcomer. sport.sk ↗
The 3:2 result gives Elversberg a strong start to the season and increases attention around the club, which joined the elite from the smallest municipality in the competition's history. Leverkusen will have to react quickly after the disappointing start, as the loss to a newcomer raises pressure ahead of their upcoming matches. Spiegel.de ↗
