American indie rock band Slow Pulp released their third album, Melodie, on September 18. It came out on the Anti Records label and was produced by Elliott Kozel. British magazine Far Out gave it a rating of 2.5 out of 5, writing that the band traded much of its former charisma for quieter, wavering tracks that at times feel unoriginal. Far Out ↗
The review recalls older songs in which the band had Midwest indie rock down pat: Cramps from the album Yard, Falling Apart from the album Moveys, and High from earlier EPs. From the new release, it praises three tracks: the energetic single Better Man, with its candid lyrics by guitarist Henry Stoehr, the punkier title track Melodie, and the indie-pop Red Car. According to Far Out, the heart-wrenching Up to You, in which singer Emily Massey stands out, also deserves attention. However, according to the reviewer, this isn't enough to carry the whole album, and the closing track Slip Away, as its name suggests, quietly slips away from the album, with a whimper, not a bang. Before Melodie, the band had released several EPs and two albums since forming in 2015.
