Spanish footballers became world champions after a 1:0 final victory over Argentina in extra time. The decisive goal at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford was scored by Ferran Torres in the 106th minute, giving Spain its second world title. La Repubblica ↗
The final had a clear tactical picture. Spain controlled the match for most of its duration, while Argentina, according to several assessments, tried mainly to disrupt their opponent's play. Shortly before extra time, Enzo Fernandez was sent off, further complicating the closing stages for the defending champion. Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez kept his team in the game for a long time and, according to Spanish assessments, made 11 saves, a final record dating back at least to 1966. ekonomika.pravda.sk ↗
The hero of the evening was Torres, who did not come on until roughly the hour mark. The Spanish forward had faced doubts during the tournament, but in the final he decided his team's return to the world throne. Coach Luis de la Fuente praised the team's moral strength after the match. lidovky.cz ↗
On the Argentine side, disappointment and questions about the future remained after the final. According to German reports, Lionel Messi cried after the match, and coach Lionel Scaloni left the post-match press conference in tears while speaking about his future work with the national team.
