Hungary opens database of communist secret police files

Hungary on Wednesday opened part of the communist state security files in the online database Nyitott Akták. It allows searching the names of approximately 55,000 to 60,000 people connected to the activity of the secret police. Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated that the government is thereby repaying a 36-year debt to Hungarian society. Telex ↗

Magyar also explained that citizens can use the electronic system Ügyfélkapu to request documents about the surveillance of themselves or their direct relatives. This may concern, for example, grandparents or other ancestors, if there is suspicion that the state security monitored them. The published database also contains tape recordings and so-called sixth cards. Telex ↗

Several publicly known figures' names appeared in the database. Among them are former foreign minister János Martonyi, Kaposvár mayor Károly Szita, politician and playwright István Csurka, and former minister István Kapitány. For some individuals, however, the files were destroyed after their death, so the available records may not provide a complete picture. Index.hu ↗

The database also lists the photographer Péter Korniss, who, according to the published information, operated under the cover name Pál. Korniss acknowledged his past and stated that he wants to speak about it in his own words. The publication of the materials may lead to further verification of individual records and to public discussion about cooperation with the communist security service.
