Berlin continues negotiations on red-green-red coalition

Coalition talks between Die Linke, the Greens and the SPD in Berlin continued on Tuesday and Wednesday. The negotiating parties met again after an initial meeting at the beginning of the week, in order to continue preparing a possible joint state government. Tagesspiegel ↗

The talks follow a decision by Berlin's Die Linke party organization, which on October 31 approved, by a large majority, the start of coalition negotiations with the Greens and the SPD. The other two parties had already previously expressed their consent to the negotiations. This opened the way, about six weeks after the state elections, to forming a red-green-red coalition. The latest meetings are meant to determine the further course of action and the areas in which the parties will seek joint solutions. Concrete results of the individual rounds of talks have not yet been announced. It is therefore unclear whether the participants managed to overcome the contentious issues that could affect the shape of the future government.

At the start of the negotiations, the parties were counting on the possibility of preparing a coalition agreement by December. However, its conclusion remains uncertain and will depend on the outcome of further negotiations. If an agreement is reached, it will then have to be confirmed by the respective party base.
