Berlin's Left Party approves coalition negotiations with the Greens and SPD

Berlin's Left Party approved at a party congress the start of coalition negotiations with the Social Democratic Party of Germany and the Greens. The Greens and the Social Democratic Party of Germany had already supported the same step earlier. After the Left Party's decision, all three parties now have a mandate for joint negotiations on the future composition of the Berlin government. Der Standard ↗

The talks are set to begin on Monday. Their goal will be to agree on a joint government program and the division of responsibilities among the individual parties. If the negotiations succeed, a coalition of the SPD, the Greens and the Left Party could be formed in Berlin, also referred to as a red-green-red alliance. Welt ↗

The decision by Berlin's Left Party comes roughly six weeks after the state elections. The party faced opposition and pressure from the outside during the vote. Nevertheless, the delegates supported the negotiations. n-tv ↗

The further course of events will depend on the outcome of the negotiations, which could prove difficult given the parties' differing positions and broader disputes within the Left Party. The future Berlin government will only be decided once a coalition agreement has been concluded. Tagesspiegel ↗
