FC Bayern Mníchov opened the season by winning the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup, beating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 on Saturday, August 22, 2026. The reigning German champion and cup winner succeeded away to the runner-up one week before the start of the Bundesliga. Der Standard ↗
The Munich team decided the match mainly with its performance in the first half. Nathaniel Brown, a new signing, opened the scoring, and Michael Olise added the second goal. Dortmund came close to equalizing late on, but Bayern held onto the narrow lead even after Ramy Bensebaini’s red card. The possible consequences of his sending-off are still to be decided. Brown surprisingly started in the number ten role instead of Jamal Musiala and impressed coach Vincent Kompany with his performance. Bayern thus found a temporary solution in the central attacking midfield, as Musiala is sidelined due to the effects of an illness. Joshua Kimmich also said that Musiala can be an example in how he is dealing with the situation. Welt ↗
New assessments after the Super Cup strengthened Bayern’s image as the main favorite for the Bundesliga. Lothar Matthäus expects Munich to win the title with a ten-point lead, and several commentaries point to the risk of a less balanced fight for first place. According to Kimmich, however, Bayern still needs improvement despite the trophy, especially after the closing phase of the match in Dortmund. Tagesspiegel ↗
