MV Hondius ship with hantavirus docked in Tenerife, passenger evacuation begins

The Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius, on which hantavirus spread, arrived and docked off the coast of Granadilla de Abona on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands on Sunday. The ship thus ended its tragic voyage, during which three passengers died of hantavirus and other people are suspected of infection. pravda.sk ↗

Passengers and part of the crew will be transported by small boats to the mainland, where a large-scale evacuation operation has been prepared. Foreign passengers will be transported to their home countries, while Spanish citizens will be moved to Madrid. The Director of the World Health Organization clarified that hantavirus is not a new pandemic virus similar to the coronavirus and that the risk to the general public is low. SITA ↗

Tenerife has specialized medical facilities ready for the treatment of potential patients. The isolation unit at La Candelaria hospital is the only clinical unit on the island with ten high-level intensive care beds designated for the treatment of infectious diseases. Virologists in Switzerland are analyzing hantavirus samples from an infected patient in order to better understand its nature and mutations. hnonline.sk ↗

Local residents of Tenerife are expressing serious concerns about the ship's arrival and fears that the arrival of the virus-affected vessel could repeat the traumatic experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic period. The Spanish government is facing criticism for confusing signals regarding whether the quarantine of passengers will be voluntary or mandatory. Three passengers suspected of contamination were transported and transferred to the Netherlands on Wednesday. According to some passengers, the atmosphere on board the ship is fairly good despite the complicated situation. RTE News ↗

The rare strain of hantavirus found on the ship is among the few variants capable of spreading between people through close contact. Health workers emphasize that the possibility of infection among medical staff and the local population during the evacuation is minimal thanks to the measures taken. Switzerland has reported an additional patient from the ship, who is being treated in Zurich with a mild course of the disease. hnonline.sk ↗
