Slovak hockey forward Juraj Slafkovský experienced a dramatic whirlwind of emotions in the first round of the NHL playoffs. In the opening game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, he delivered an exceptional performance, scoring three goals and deciding the victory for the Montreal Canadiens. The second game of the series, however, brought a major turn. sport.sk ↗
In the middle period of the second matchup, Slafkovský fought with Tampa Bay forward Brandon Hagel. The fight ended painfully for the Slovak international – he took a hard punch and fell to the ice. Experts criticized his decision to fight, saying he shouldn't fight and isn't good at it. Slafkovský served a five-minute penalty for the incident. Montreal had the second game well in hand and led 2:1 after two periods, but Tampa Bay managed to turn the score around and took the game to overtime. The Lightning players ultimately won 3:2 in overtime, evening the series at 1:1 in games. SITA ↗
After the series shifted locations, Montreal returned to home ice and, according to sources, changed its approach. In the fifth game on Tampa Bay's ice, they triumphed narrowly 3:2 and earned themselves a match point to advance. Montreal thus leads the series 3:2 in games and is one game away from advancing to the Eastern Conference semifinals. Montreal's players faced intense physical play and a barrage of attacks in the series that Slafkovský had not previously experienced in the playoffs, which required changes in the team's strategy. dennikn.sk ↗
A goal in the dramatic conclusion of the second game was also added by defenseman Erik Černák, a Slovak international on the Tampa team, who made his mark on the scoresheet. In the fifth game, however, neither Slafkovský nor Černák was among the scorers. Slafkovský thus gradually established himself as a key player for Montreal's continuation in the playoffs, moving on from being the hero of the first game, even though his exceptional hat trick in the opening matchup showed his potential this season. hnonline.sk ↗
