The European Parliament on Thursday backed a three-year delay to new rules on methane emissions from imported fossil fuels. Under the approved proposal, obligations for importers of oil, gas and coal would only start applying from May 2031, although their introduction had originally been planned for 2027. The rules were meant to require importers to monitor and report methane emissions, which are among the significant greenhouse gases and arise during the extraction, processing and transport of fossil fuels. Their aim was to limit methane leaks in supply chains and strengthen the European Union's climate measures. SITA ↗

A majority of MEPs voted for the delay. The proposal was also supported by the European People's Party, which joined forces with members of right-wing and far-right factions in the vote. Such a move disrupted the previous political practice under which the main parliamentary groups avoided cooperating with the far right. Politico Europe ↗

The decision means importers will have roughly three additional years to meet the new requirements. At the same time, however, the delay postpones the application of rules aimed at reducing emissions of a greenhouse gas that has a significant impact on global warming.

Further progress will depend on negotiations between the European Parliament and the member states. The final form of the rules and the timeline for their application may still be subject to further changes.
