The death of the 47-year-old general is the heaviest personnel loss in the top command of the junta since the two consecutive military coups of 2020 and 2021. The assassination came as part of a 24-hour offensive that hit six locations, including the Kati base, which is also home to transitional President Assimi Goïta. Al Jazeera reporter Nicolas Haque described Camara as "one of the most influential figures in the military leadership, seen by some as a future leader of Mali." The Africa Report ↗

Who was Sadio Camara
Camara was born on March 22, 1979, in Kati and, before seizing power in August 2020, headed the local military academy — the very place where both coups were planned. He led the Ministry of Defense from October 5, 2020, to May 24, 2021, and again from June 11, 2021, until his death. He was one of five colonels who, together with Goïta, deposed President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, and during the second "coup within a coup" in May 2021 he again stood at Goïta's side. Wikipedia: Sadio Camara ↗According to The Africa Report, in recent months he had been systematically installing his own people in the army's top command and in the civilian government. The death of the defense minister in a country where the security apparatus is fighting for basic survival means a vacuum in the chain of command at the worst possible moment — during one of the most serious coordinated offensives by rebel groups in recent years. Architect of the relationship with Moscow and lifted US sanctions
Camara was the main builder of the Russian-Malian military axis. After the diplomatic break with Paris in 2021–2022, it was he who opened Bamako to the Wagner Group, and after the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin in August 2023 he secured a smooth transition to the successor unit Africa Corps, which today is directly controlled by the Russian Ministry of Defense. In July 2023, the US Treasury Department placed him on the OFAC sanctions list for facilitating Wagner Group activities in Mali; American documents on that occasion also stated that Camara held French citizenship. US Department of the Treasury ↗On February 27, 2026, OFAC lifted sanctions against Camara and two other Malian officials — Alou Boï Diarra and Adama Bagayoko. A former US official told Reuters that the move fit into a broader effort by Washington to improve relations with Sahel countries, where extremist violence and instability have sharply increased in recent years. Human Rights Watch and other organizations criticized the move as a concession without accountability for abuses committed during the conflict. Kyiv Independent (Reuters) ↗
Less than two months after the sanctions were lifted, Camara is dead and Africa Corps is retreating from Kidal under pressure from rebels.
Kidal: rebels report withdrawal of Russian allies
On Sunday, FLA spokesman Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane announced that the rebels had reached an agreement with the Malian army on the withdrawal of its units and its Russian allies from the town of Kidal. "An agreement has been reached that allows the army and its Africa Corps allies to leave Camp No. 2, where they had been hiding since Saturday," AFP quoted him as saying. According to AFP, residents saw a military convoy leaving and noted that "for now the streets" have been taken over by the militants. TASR / AFP via teraz.sk ↗For Moscow, this is a symbolic and operational blow. According to earlier US estimates, there were approximately 2,000 Russian contractors in Mali; after Wagner's departure in 2025, part of the structures was taken over by Africa Corps, though the exact current number is unclear. Kidal, which the Malian army captured together with Wagner in November 2023, was considered the showcase of Russian-Malian cooperation. Its loss after nearly two and a half years is a signal that the rebels are able to push Africa Corps out of the town as well. Wikipedia: Africa Corps ↗
Goïta safe, but under pressure
Goïta was evacuated during the attack in Kati. Al Jazeera reporters stated that the president is "alive and in a safe location" and remains in command of the army. The junta has not yet announced the name of a new defense minister. During the day on Saturday, the Malian army (FAMa) claimed the situation was under control — Sunday's withdrawal from Kidal and the official confirmation of Camara's death have since overshadowed that claim. The government reports 16 wounded, and has not yet released death tolls among soldiers and civilians. Al Jazeera ↗International reactions
The European Union on Sunday described the attacks as "an act of terrorism." "We strongly condemn the terrorist attacks committed in Mali on April 25," said spokesman Anouar El Anouni, expressing condolences "to the families of the victims, as well as to the Malian authorities." UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the offensive and called for coordinated international support in addressing the terrorist threat in the Sahel. TASR via teraz.sk ↗The attacks were also condemned by the African Union, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the United States, Senegal and Turkey. The US Embassy in Bamako on Saturday urged US citizens to stay home. So far, there has been no immediate reaction from Moscow or Beijing — the junta's two main partners outside the region. Camara's successor. Who takes over the Ministry of Defense within the junta will determine whether the Russian-Malian axis continues with the same intensity.Africa Corps after Kidal. Whether the withdrawal is limited to Kidal, or whether Moscow also reduces its numbers in Bamako and Gao. We are also watching the reaction of Wagner-linked Telegram channels, which after the defeat at Tinzaouaten in July 2024 admitted the losses were heavy.
JNIM–FLA connection. Saturday's offensive was the first openly acknowledged coordination between the al-Qaeda affiliate and Tuareg separatists. Whether this is a one-off agreement born of necessity or a strategic alliance will become clear in the coming week.
Burkina Faso and Niger. The juntas in these countries share with Mali the same ecosystem, the same Russian instructors, and the same JNIM threat. Once it is confirmed that a JNIM attack can reach a defense minister inside fortified Kati, the scenario becomes exportable.
Sanctions rhetoric from Washington. Following Camara's death, Congress and Democratic senators may raise the question of whether the February amnesty was wise. We are watching for possible new sanctions against Africa Corps or the Malian junta.
