Explosives near TurkStream pipeline: Orbán faces both a security crisis and a political challenge ahead of elections
After being notified of the discovery of the explosives, Orbán convened a meeting of the State Defense Council on Sunday afternoon. The Hungarian prime minister subsequently ordered the deployment of the army to protect the pipeline running through Serbia to Hungary and beyond. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced that the pipeline would be protected by the army from Serbian territory all the way to the border with Slovakia. At the same time, Hungary, Russia, Turkey, and Serbia agreed to strengthen protection of the Turkish Stream pipeline against possible attacks. hlavnespravy.sk ↗
Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán links the incident to Ukraine and its potential attacks on Russian gas. However, his opposition and international observers reject these claims, saying it is likely a staged action in the form of a false-flag attack. Critics point to the timing of the incident — it occurred exactly one week before the decisive Hungarian elections on April 12, in which Orbán faces his most powerful rivals after sixteen years of uninterrupted dominance. Opposition politician Péter Magyar called the incident a provocation. dennikn.sk ↗
According to public opinion polls, Orbán faces his biggest political challenge since 2010. Many first-time voters point out that it is not normal for a single leader to lead the country for twenty years without a break. Hungary remains dependent on Russian gas and is a candidate country for the European Union. The security situation surrounding key energy infrastructure is thus fundamentally changing the political atmosphere in the country in the run-up to the elections. forum24.cz ↗
