Fico announces criminal complaint against prosecutor Šúrek and warns of chaos in Iran

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced at Sunday's press conference that he would file a criminal complaint against Michal Šúrek, a prosecutor at the General Prosecutor's Office. With this step, the Prime Minister wants to reverse a decision from 2023. In connection with this initiative, Fico announced that the government will also initiate the reopening of criminal proceedings in the Makó case.

At the same time, Fico is responding to the geopolitical situation in the Middle East, where he expressed solidarity with countries affected by Iran's missile attacks. The Prime Minister described the attack by the USA and Israel on Iran as further proof of the total breakdown of the world order and the disregard of international law. He criticizes the fact that large and powerful states do as they please, regardless of international obligations.

In the context of the security of the Slovak population, Fico declared the government's readiness to evacuate Slovak citizens from the Middle East region in the event of an escalation of the conflict. At the same time, he warns of the negative consequences of military actions for the global economy, specifically a possible increase in energy and petrol prices.

Among the domestic political challenges is also the disappointment of the chairman of the Slovak National Party, Andrej Danko, with Prime Minister Fico. In discussions, Danko stated that he has come to hate the word consolidation, which points to internal tension within the coalition government. Fico's steps thus reflect an effort to address, in his view, unjustified legal decisions from the past, in parallel with managing acute security and economic issues.
