Peace Council began negotiations, Blanár called it the only path to peace in the Gaza Strip

US President Donald Trump officially launched the Peace Council in Washington on Thursday, a new diplomatic initiative aimed at stabilization in the Gaza Strip and the wider region. At the founding session, he announced that the United States would contribute ten billion dollars. In addition, nine other countries pledged seven billion dollars in humanitarian aid to the Palestinian territory.

Slovak Minister of Foreign Affairs Juraj Blanár attended the session as an observer and declared that the Peace Council is currently the only relevant initiative capable of establishing a peaceful order in the Gaza Strip and across the Middle East. Hungary became the only European Union country represented at the highest level, with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán confirming his country's participation on account of its own principles and security interests.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clearly set out a condition for the start of the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. According to him, the rebuilding of the territory cannot take place until Hamas is completely disarmed and demilitarized. One of the most sensitive questions for the Peace Council thus remains the future of the Palestinian movement, which still maintains its influence in the region.

Belarus, which as a close ally of Russia is not usually invited to international events, announced that it had received an invitation, but the US visa authorities did not grant one to its representatives. France and Belgium also expressed surprise at the participation of EU Commissioner Dubravka Šuica, who attended as an observer without a mandate to represent the Union's member states.
