Champions League: Real and PSG win their opening play-off matches

The Champions League football competition has entered the play-off phase for qualification to the round of 16. Real Madrid won its first duel away to Benfica Lisbon 1:0, although other circumstances of this match in Lisbon will likely be discussed for a long time as well. The club's management returned to the idea of a possible withdrawal from the competition in light of the problems that have arisen.

Paris Saint-Germain, who are defending the Champions League trophy, won their opening play-off match away to AS Monaco 3:2. The trophy defenders found themselves in an unpleasant situation when they were trailing in the 18th minute, but ultimately managed to turn the course of the match in their favor.

Four duels were played on Tuesday as part of the first round of the play-offs. Besides the matches involving Real and PSG, there was also a match between Galatasaray and Juventus. For Real, the round-of-16 play-off spot is a disappointment, since in the final round of the group stage of the league phase they lost 2:4 to their upcoming opponent Benfica and dropped out of the top eight, which would have guaranteed them direct progression to the round of 16 without the play-offs.

The duel between the French clubs PSG and AS Monaco was also a rematch against an opponent from the final round of the competition's group stage. The Champions League thus continues with dramatic duels whose outcomes remain uncertain.
