SpaceX restricted part of Starlink services for the Ukrainian military

SpaceX restricted some Starlink satellite network services in Ukraine overnight. The move disrupted the combat operations of the Ukrainian army, which according to Kyiv had no advance knowledge of the change. STVR (Spravy) ↗

The restriction concerns devices intended for military purposes. When used in vehicles or during other movement at speeds higher than 160 kilometers per hour, the service no longer works. The Ukrainian army uses Starlink terminals for communication and coordination of operations, and the change in conditions has affected activity at the front. aktuality.sk ↗

The information was provided by Serhiy Beskrestnov, an advisor to the Ukrainian president. Partial restriction of service was also confirmed by a source from Ukraine's 7th Rapid Reaction Corps, which is deployed on the southeastern front. Available data does not make clear why SpaceX implemented the restriction or whether it is a permanent measure. teraz.sk ↗

Starlink provides satellite internet connectivity through SpaceX's network of satellites. Ukraine also uses this service under military conditions, where it is important for unit communication and information transfer. According to Kyiv, the unexpected change therefore affected ongoing combat operations.

Ukrainian authorities have not yet stated the extent of the problems caused or how many devices were affected by the restriction. Further developments will depend on SpaceX's decision and a possible agreement with the Ukrainian side on the terms of using the service.
