On Saturday, Veľká Mača ceremonially opened the Monument to Freedom of Speech, built on the site where the house of murdered journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová once stood. The unveiling took place more than eight years after their murder. trnavak.sk ↗

The house on Brezová Street, which Kuciak and Kušnírová had bought and were gradually renovating, no longer stands on the plot. The site of their shared life became, after the tragedy, the subject of public debate about how the event should be commemorated and what legacy should remain for future generations. dennikn.sk ↗

The new monument is meant to commemorate the tragic event while also expressing the significance of freedom of speech. According to co-author Martin Piaček, the aim was to create a space for preserving memory that would also bring hope for the future. teraz.sk ↗

Spontaneous expressions of public commemoration had previously appeared at the site, including the inscription "Love is stronger than evil" on a metal gate. The parents of Ján Kuciak and Martina Kušnírová spent a long time considering what to do with the site. sme.sk ↗

The investor behind the monument is the Trnava Self-Governing Region. The opening created in Veľká Mača a permanent place dedicated to the couple and to the values linked to their story, in particular the protection of journalistic work and freedom of speech. STVR (Minúta po minúte) ↗
