Ireland proposes reduction of future European Union budget

The Irish presidency of the Council of the European Union has proposed reducing the Union's future seven-year budget to €1.622 trillion. The document is intended to help unblock negotiations between member states, which had so far not progressed due to differing positions on EU financing. Le Figaro ↗

The European Commission last July proposed a budget of €1.763 trillion. The Irish proposal thus envisages a reduction of approximately €140 billion. Politico, meanwhile, reported a reduction of €159 billion, with the exact size of the difference varying across individual reports. STVR (Minúta po minúte) ↗

According to available data, the proposed cuts would mainly affect support for competitiveness and development aid. Agricultural and regional funds, by contrast, are to be protected from more significant reductions under the proposal. Politico Europe ↗

The European Union's seven-year budget requires agreement among all member states. The Irish presidency therefore prepared a revised version with the aim of bringing countries' differing positions closer together and restarting negotiations on both the overall amount and the distribution of funds. Member states will decide on the next steps during the ongoing negotiations.
