Lionel Messi at age 39 announced the end of his international career and will no longer play for Argentina. He revealed his decision on Monday on Instagram, approximately six weeks after the lost World Cup final against Spain, in which Argentina lost 0:1 after extra time. sport.sk ↗
Messi ended his tenure with the national team after more than two decades. He played 207 matches for Argentina and scored 125 goals. With the national team, he won the World Cup title in 2022, also won the Copa América, and in 2014 and 2026 finished second with the team at World Championships. Multiple reactions describe his departure as the end of an era in Argentine football. hnonline.sk ↗
According to the published statement, Messi had the decision prepared shortly after the final against Spain. He stated that he gave everything to the national team and understood that the right time had come. The reports also point out that just one day before the announcement, he shone in the Inter Miami jersey with four goals in a 7:1 victory over Montreal, helping to end a five-match winless streak. teraz.sk ↗
Messi will continue at the club level with Inter Miami. The Argentine national team, however, enters a new era without the captain who led it to the World title and became one of its most prominent personalities. SITA ↗
