On Sunday, August 2, Greece faced several large wildfires that struck the country amid difficult weather conditions. During firefighting operations, two firefighting helicopters collided. According to available information, one of the aircraft exploded after the collision and crashed to the ground, while the two-member crew of one of the helicopters was successfully rescued. A video released by Greek media captures the moment when the rotor of one helicopter struck the underside of the other helicopter. The accident occurred during an operation against fires spreading in several parts of the country. Firefighters therefore had to deal not only with the flames themselves but also with the consequences of the accident involving the aerial equipment deployed to fight them. svet.sme.sk ↗

The situation is complicated by strong winds, drought, and high temperatures. A forest fire approximately 70 kilometers northwest of Athens was spreading under extremely difficult conditions. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis warned that the country faces very challenging days ahead, as the fires have gotten out of control on multiple fronts at once. SITA ↗

Every summer, Greece regularly battles fires fueled by heat and drought. Further developments will depend mainly on the weather and on whether firefighters manage to bring the most dangerous hotspots under control. Novy Cas ↗
