Slovakia confirms occurrence of dangerous ash tree pest

Slovakia has for the first time confirmed the occurrence of the emerald ash borer, a dangerous pest of ash trees. The Central Control and Testing Institute for Agriculture in Bratislava reported the find in the east of the country, in the area around Streda nad Bodrogom in the Trebišov district. kultura.pravda.sk ↗

Experts detected the presence of the invasive species even before the first visible damage to trees appeared. According to available information, 18 individuals were found in pheromone traps. The emerald ash borer is listed as one of the priority pests of the European Union and poses a risk primarily to ash trees. sme.sk ↗

The occurrence of the pest has also triggered reactions at the level of state authorities. The case concerns forest protection and agricultural inspection, since it involves a species whose spread could affect the health of trees. Reports indicate that the situation continues to be monitored and that the information has been updated on an ongoing basis. aktuality.sk ↗

Further steps will depend on the extent of the detected occurrence and on the measures the relevant authorities adopt to limit the spread of the pest. The confirmed find in eastern Slovakia is an important signal for the monitoring of ash trees and for further cooperation among expert institutions in forest protection. korzar.sme.sk ↗
