Mexican footballers advanced to the round of 16 at the home World Cup after a 2:0 win over Ecuador. The match at the Azteca Stadium began approximately an hour later due to a storm and lightning in the vicinity, after which FIFA's safety protocol was activated. STVR (Spravy) ↗
The home team decided the match already in the first half. The Mexicans had an excellent start to the match, were dominant, and had built a two-goal lead by half-time. Julián Quiñones opened the scoring, timing his run well and sending Mexico into the lead with a powerful strike. Raúl Jiménez was also among the scorers, and after his goal the Mexicans went into the locker room with a 2:0 result. teraz.sk ↗
After the change of ends, Ecuador was unable to get back into the match. Mexico also confirmed its solid defense, not conceding a goal even in its fourth match of the tournament. The end of the match was also marked by the sending-off of Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapié for violating the rule related to covering the mouth. irozhlas.cz ↗
Mexico thus continues in the home tournament and will face England or the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the next round. Ecuador is eliminated after the loss, with a third team from the same group now having been knocked out. Der Standard ↗
