Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has asked Slovakia, Poland, Romania and Hungary to allow transit of Ukrainian grain through their territories. The alternative route is meant to replace sea transport, which has been restricted by the Black Sea blockade resulting from Russian attacks. hnonline.sk ↗
The information was announced by Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar after a joint meeting with Zelensky. According to his statement, both representatives also agreed on a restart of Ukrainian-Hungarian relations. Part of the talks included a request to create overland transit options for Ukrainian grain. teraz.sk ↗
The proposed route should lead through several neighboring states, including Slovakia. Ukraine is thus seeking a way to continue exports after sea transport became complicated or impossible due to the Black Sea blockade. Specific transit conditions and the scope of planned supplies have not yet been announced. STVR (Spravy) ↗
All four countries approached should be involved in the process. Their decision will be important for determining the route, logistical conditions and the scope of transport. The talks between Zelensky and Magyar may also open space for improving relations between Ukraine and Hungary.
Further developments will depend on an agreement between Slovakia, Poland, Romania and Hungary on a specific transit mechanism. It is not yet known when the alternative overland route might begin to be used.
