Szalay calls on Šaško for law on anti-alcohol detoxification units

National Council of the Slovak Republic MP Tomáš Szalay from the Freedom and Solidarity party is calling on Health Minister Kamil Šaško to prepare legislation enabling the establishment of anti-alcohol detoxification rooms. According to the opposition MP, these so-called detox units could help address the situation at hospital emergency departments. hnonline.sk ↗

SaS claims that establishing detox units could relieve emergency departments of patients under the influence of alcohol who do not require urgent medical care. At the same time, according to the party, they could help increase the safety of healthcare workers employed in hospitals. STVR (Minúta po minúte) ↗

Szalay emphasized that patients must perceive the emergency department as a safe place. "Patients need to know that the emergency department is a safe place," the MP stated. His appeal is directed at Health Minister Kamil Šaško, who should prepare the necessary legal amendments. domov.sme.sk ↗

Anti-alcohol detoxification rooms would serve to accommodate people under the influence of alcohol in cases where their condition does not require treatment at the emergency department. The specific conditions for their establishment, as well as the timeline for preparing the legislation, have not yet been specified.

Further developments will depend on the position of the Ministry of Health and on the preparation of the relevant draft law. The issue concerns both the organization of emergency medical care and the protection of healthcare workers in the performance of their duties.
