US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov about a possible meeting between the presidents of the United States and Russia, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. The meeting could take place in China during the summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, known under the abbreviation APEC. lidovky.cz ↗
The conversation between Rubio and Lavrov concerned preparations for a possible presidential meeting. However, the available information does not indicate that the United States and Russia have already agreed on its exact date, location, or agenda.
A possible meeting between Trump and Putin would take place on Chinese soil as part of the international APEC summit. Such an event creates an opportunity for bilateral talks between representatives of the participating countries, but the mere presence of both presidents at the same summit does not yet confirm that they will meet in person.
Rubio and Lavrov are among the leading diplomatic representatives of Washington and Moscow. Their conversation therefore signals that the question of a possible contact between Trump and Putin is being addressed at the foreign policy level of both countries.
Further developments will depend on an agreement between the United States and Russia on the terms of the meeting. For now, it has only been confirmed that the ministers discussed the possible summit. Details of the next steps and a final decision on the presidents' meeting have not yet been made public.
