Romanowski Said to Be in Pro-Russian Transnistria and Requesting Guarantees

Polish ex-deputy justice minister Marcin Romanowski, sought by Poland on corruption suspicions, is reportedly in Tiraspol in Transnistria, a pro-Russian separatist region of Moldova. The information is also confirmed by his petition addressed to a court in Warsaw, in which he requests the issuance of a so-called safe conduct. HVG ↗

Romanowski was supposed to have spent a longer period in Hungary after leaving Poland, where he was provided protection by Viktor Orbán's previous government. However, following the political change in Budapest, according to available information, he left for Tiraspol. The question remains how he reached the region and what travel documents he used in doing so.

In his petition addressed to the court, he stated that he is prepared to participate in court proceedings and procedural actions if he is allowed to return without immediate detention. The Warsaw Prosecutor's Office links him to suspicions of embezzlement of public funds.

Reports of his stay in Transnistria have provoked sharp political reactions in Poland. Representatives of the ruling coalition claim that the location of his refuge strengthens suspicions of pro-Russian ties within part of the Polish right. However, a PiS spokesperson stated that he has no information about Romanowski's whereabouts and is not in contact with him.

Further developments will depend on the decision of the Warsaw court regarding his petition and on whether Polish authorities will be able to achieve his return from territory that is not under the control of the Moldovan government.
