What Europe Writes: Iceland Narrowly Counts Votes on EU Talks, Russian Africa Corps Helped Quell Niger Uprising, Germany Has the Most Expensive Electricity in G20

Icelandic election commissions counted votes all night and the difference between "yes" and "no" fit into several hundred. Even before midnight, the camp for renewing access negotiations with the Union was leading — it was not a vote on the entry itself —, after counting the northeastern and southern districts, "no" took the lead. The rest of the continent meanwhile was dealing with three things at once: Nigerian junta reports that it suppressed a rebellion of its own soldiers with the help of the Russian Africa Corps, according to analysis by comparison service Verivox, Germany has the highest electricity prices among G20 countries, and the death toll from floods in Nepal and the Tibetan part of the Himalayas has approached seven hundred according to local authorities. Overview from 37 countries over the last 22 hours. In the afternoon, two bigger things were added to that: a ferry capsized off northern Cyprus with almost three hundred people on board and the Icelandic count ended more clearly than the night suggested — 52.8 to 47.2 against negotiations, with the government already announcing that it will formally withdraw the request.
