EU Leaders in Brussels Seek Agreement on Budget and Energy Prices
The budget negotiations are accompanied by a dispute over its overall size and individual spending items. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the prime ministers of several other countries are demanding significant cuts. However, it was not clear until late evening whether the leaders had managed to achieve concrete progress. Deutschlandfunk ↗
French President Emmanuel Macron warned that reaching an agreement could be difficult in 2027 given the planned presidential elections in France. According to him, the budget negotiations could therefore also become more complicated due to the domestic political situation. Le Figaro ↗
The summit is also discussing measures that could lower energy prices. Member states do not agree on a common approach to this issue and, according to the available account, have limited options for responding to rising costs. The negotiations also include relations with China and its exports to the European Union. Le Monde ↗
Costa wants the budget agreement to be concluded this year. However, the differing views of member states on cuts, spending and other priorities suggest that difficult negotiations will continue. hnonline.sk ↗
